One Life Change That Will Elevate You To Success

Episode 77 · · 8 min

Hosted by Mike DeHaan, Dan Austin, Dylan Koch

In this episode

Mike DeHaan makes the case that the single biggest change an investor can make is joining a community of people chasing the same goal. He shares how his first mastermind broke his plateau after doing deals solo, and uses two recent examples close to him — a friend who joined GoBundance's Emerge and Ascend programs and his wife searching for a community after leaving her W2 — to show how the right group shifts your sense of what's normal and possible.

Key takeaways

  • Mike did flips and bought rentals on his own but had no real upward trajectory until he joined his first mastermind.
  • The value of a mastermind wasn't primarily the coach or the curriculum — it was being surrounded by people already doing what he was trying to do, which reset his expectations.
  • His answer to 'what would you do differently': join a group like that earlier and get more involved sooner.
  • To find a tribe, talk to individuals already doing what you want to do and ask what groups they belong to — they're almost always in something.
  • The same principle applies outside business: for fitness, ecommerce, or anything else, find people further along and spend time with them.
  • Not every group fits everyone. Mike and Dan's Instant Investor Program is aimed at people pursuing deeply discounted deals aggressively; casual investors keeping a W2 should look for a different group.

Show notes

You’ve probably heard the saying: “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.”

If you want to elevate your current situation, you have to do things differently, with people who are already where you want to be, not where you were or where you currently are. This is a sure way to catapult yourself to success, and remove barriers along the way.

This is precisely what our host Mike DeHaan discusses in today’s episode. Mike made the decision to make a change in his life that is now sort of a success hack that he wants to share with all of you. This choice could be what ultimately changes the course of your journey, like it did for him!

The change we are talking about is to join a community of like minded people who are marching towards the same goals as you are, and immersing yourself into that group of people.

It’s easier said than done, so Mike is sharing his secrets on how he decided to make this change, how to find and join a community of like minded people, and how to leverage and make the most out of your participation within it. As well as all the benefits Mike and the people around him have seen once this change was made.

Tune in to hear how you can transform your life and benefit from being part of a community of people that want what you want!

Frequently asked questions

What is GoBundance's Emerge program?

Mike describes GoBundance as a group for millionaires and high-performing individuals to be around like-minded people. For those who don't yet have millionaire status, Emerge is an entry program to prepare them and build a similar mindset. He notes it's a relatively significant financial commitment.

Do you need a mastermind to succeed in real estate?

Mike says he was able to do deals, flips and rentals on his own, but had no momentum until he joined a mastermind. His view is that the community, more than the coaching material, is what removed his self-imposed limitations.

How do you find a community of like-minded investors?

Start by talking to people. Find individuals already doing what you want to do and ask what groups they're part of — Mike says they're almost always in something.

Speaker 1: [0:02] Welcome to the Collecting Keys Real Estate Investing Podcast with your host, Mike DeHaan and Dan Austin. From wins, losses, horror stories, and tactics for optimizing your business, Mike and Dan take a real uncensored deep dive into the ins and outs of running a full time real estate investment and wholesaling business.

Mike DeHaan: [0:26] What's going on, guys? Mike DeHaan here. And on this episode of the collecting keys Friday focus, I wanted to talk about the one life change that I would suggest you make that will immediately escalate your success. And this isn't some sort of, like, life hack, like take hot showers, cold showers, do temperature regulation, or some sort of, like, workout regimen or some sort of meditation or prayer or journaling, practice, anything like that. This is a little bit more macro, I guess. And I would say that this is the one change that I made that really took me from sort of trying to figure it out to being able to take things to the next level. And that change is to join a community of people who are marching towards the same thing as you. And not only that, but but join that community and fully just dive in and enamel yourself with that community and what everyone's doing. So this thought was kind of spurred, I guess, by two things. It has two recent local situations to me. One of which was my best friend here that's local. He recently, we kinda joke said, took the red pill and started getting into the sort of entrepreneurial mindset and started making moves to be able to generate his own money and be able to leave his relatively lucrative w two. And since we sort of had a talk about kinda what that would look like, he has since made the jump and joined the GoBundance Emerge program and the GoBundance Ascend program. So in case you're unfamiliar, GoBundance is a group meant for millionaires and high performing individuals to sort of be around each other and be around like minded people to elevate each other and grow. But if you don't have that millionaire status, they have a entry program to sort of get you prepared to do that, but also get you a similar mindset.

Mike DeHaan: [2:17] It's a relatively decent financial commitment. But he decided to take that leap and jump in. And just in the short period of time since he's done so, I've already started to see the change in him and sort of how he's been viewing the world and viewing different opportunities in his life. And the excitement around the kind of stuff that he's working on has really started to grow. And so I now know for certain, and he does as well, that it's not only a matter of if he's gonna be successful and when. And then the second sort of conversation with this that sort of spurred this thought was very recently with my wife. She left her w two back in August of this year. We had some plans to do some traveling and stuff right after that, which was fine. But since we got back from our trip, it's been about three months, and she came forward just the other day about how she was stuck and wasn't really sure where to go next. She was trying to figure out how she wanted to continue with the different visions that she had for herself. She's an artist. She isn't necessarily naturally entrepreneurial minded. I guess the way that she is is much more like she likes to be a people pleaser, like likes to have direction from other people on what she's doing. So now to be trying to figure stuff out for herself is really difficult. So we basically had the discussion of, well, it sounds like what you're missing is groups of people to sort of affirm your direction and help drive you in the direction you need to go.

Mike DeHaan: [3:46] And ultimately decided what was missing is a community. So now she's been starting to look for these different community aspects. Right? And even just the process of trying to find that that specific group has started to change her viewpoint on sort of what's gonna be coming next for This whole sort of view of, like, the importance of having a tribe, I really can't emphasize that enough. Because if you go back to when I was sort of trying to figure out the real estate game, I was able to do some deals and stuff by myself, was able to get things generally moving, did some flips, bought some rentals, all that sort of stuff, but had no real momentum, had no upper trajectory at all. And, really, it was after I joined my first mastermind that things really started to change. And it wasn't even, you know, that it was, like, about the coach or it was about, like, the material that was even taught in it. It was literally just the fact that I joined this group, and I was suddenly just 100% surrounded by people that were doing what I was trying to do. A lot of them were further ahead from where I was, and that just becomes kind of the new normal and the new expectation. And all of a sudden, all the limitations that you sort of put for yourself and for your situation, they seem to just go away and just changes your whole perspective on life.

Mike DeHaan: [5:00] So whenever people always and people always ask, like, what's the number one thing that I would do if I could go back in time? And, honestly, it would be to join a group like that earlier and to get more involved in groups like that earlier because the momentum that builds from that is truly truly exponential. And it like, I think that that most people can attest that finding their tribe and finding like minded people is really what takes it to the next level in the long run. If you're not really sure what that looks like or sort of where to find it, just start talking to people. Find even, like, single individuals who are kinda doing what you're doing and see who they hang out with, see what groups they're a part of. I guarantee you they're a part of something. If you wanna be around people like Dan and myself, shameless self promotion, we do have our group, which is the instant investor program that we've started to build a tribe there. And we now have about 20 people that are doing deals and are all like minded and marching towards the same goal. So we go to instantinvestorprogram.com and check that out. We we know might be the right fit for everybody because our program is focused on people that wanna take investing very seriously, wanna pursue deep deeply discounted deals, and wanna pursue financial freedom and wealth at a pretty aggressive pace.

Mike DeHaan: [6:10] Maybe that's not you. Right? Maybe you're someone that wants to be more of a casual investor, and you wanna go and maintain your w two, but just buy properties and do it a little bit more conservatively because that's just your nature. There's groups out there for that. Maybe you're someone that doesn't wanna do it in real estate. You wanna do it in ecommerce or Amazon businesses or anything like that. There's groups out there that focus on those things. And not only just in terms of business, but also in every part of your life. You wanna get into fitness or you wanna really change your fitness level, go and find people that are fitter than you, hang out with them, join that group, whether that's a gym, that's an online community, whatever that looks like. Those are the things that'll make a difference in your life. So, you know, you guys get something out of that. If you have any groups that you find that are super cool, I would actually be interested to hear about them. I'm always curious about what's out there. I mean, you never know. Even if they're not business related, it's possible that we have similar sort of interests. So you can go ahead and send those to me. If enjoyed you this episode, please go and subscribe.
